has apologised for his foul-mouthed rant over team radio after he was cruelly denied a shot at victory at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon. Mercedes looked as if they had played a blinder by committing both of their drivers to a one-stop strategy but were thwarted when the safety car was deployed towards the closing stages of the 72-lap contest.

The Silver Arrows opted to pit third-placed  while also stopped for soft tyres, leaving Hamilton as a sitting duck when the green flags were waved once again. The 37-year-old was unable to prevent Verstappen from immediately retaking the lead before he was ultimately forced to settle for a fourth-placed finish after dropping a further two positions before the chequered flag.

Hamilton went on to slam his Mercedes team using plenty of colourful language in an angry radio rant, but was quick to say sorry when quizzed on his mid-race comments by Sky Sports F1.

“My apologies to the team,” he said. “I don’t know what I said, I lost it for a second and I think they know it’s so much passion. I want to look at it as a glass half full.

“We struggled coming here from Spa and fighting against the Red Bulls. We were quicker than most, but if it were for the safety car I think we would have challenged him [Verstappen] on the one-stop, which I don’t think the others could do.

“So many things to take away. The car is finally working and if this can be the same for the next few races we will breathe down their necks and we will get that win. The last race we were miles away and we didn’t understand and yesterday I was pole until the last corner.

“I was 0.7 seconds up on Max. They are quicker on the straights but he would have probably clipped me on the straight. We would have been third or second yesterday and be in a better position.”
